Today this bandage is applied in many cases and, to be honest, sometimes it is used exaggeratedly. So much so that there are often situations in which the neuromuscular bandage does not provide benefits to the patient. Let’s see what it is and when it should be applied.

The neuromuscular bandage, also known as kinesiotaping or neuromuscular taping, from its name in English, is a system that is based on the application of elastic bands on the patient’s skin.

If the bandage stays in place it decompresses the damaged area and stimulates circulation, among other benefits. Everything is due to the force exerted by the bandage, which stretches the skin in a gentle but constant way. In fact, there are different types of bandages – hence the different colors – which have a greater or lesser traction force depending on the lesion to be treated.

Although it was invented in the 1970s, there are very few scientific articles supporting its use and demonstrating its benefits. In fact, there are several studies that deny its usefulness, but there are also others that support it.

The lack of studies in this regard does not prove that it is not useful, but applying a neuromuscular bandage on a specific area of ​​the body and for a certain pathology is not always of great benefit.

What is the neuromuscular bandage used for?

As for pain, some studies speak well of short-term neuromuscular bandaging. They claim that this type of bandage helps to control pain in muscle pathologies for up to 24 hours after its application.

Its application has also been shown to be useful in patients with chronic soft tissue pain. Therefore, the bandage also removes some tension from the affected tissue, thus allowing it to heal.

On the contrary, there is no evidence of its use to increase the force exerted by the muscles. Studies on this are, at best, contradictory. In other words, its usefulness has not been confirmed or denied, as there are cases where it proves useful and others where it is not. Therefore, it is clear that there may be other factors affecting its effectiveness and that the bandage cannot improve.
