Self-leadership: What Is It And How Is It Acquired?

To some, the concept of self-leadership may seem confusing. In this article we present some steps to put it into practice in life and in sport.
Self-leadership: what is it and how is it acquired?

Leadership is the ability of each person to influence and motivate others to achieve their goals, goals or plans. Instead, self-leadership or self-control is about recognizing one’s emotions and thoughts and achieving one’s goals.

Thanks to self-leadership, people are able to make decisions about their life. There are two important factors for an individual to decide for himself: trust and awareness.

When it comes to sports, self-leadership helps you stay steadfast in your goals and training routines. In fact, in a field such as sports it is essential to work on self-motivation and self-control to achieve the set goals.

Self-leadership: how is it acquired?

First of all, it is important to keep in mind the personality type and tastes of each in front of the sport they practice. Likewise, you need to know what motivates you to move forward in your life, both personally and professionally.

Having clarified these points, we can move on to the rest, regardless of the order. Here are the factors that determine self-leadership:

  1. Self-knowledge : Knowing yourself means understanding and recognizing your thoughts and emotions in various situations. This helps to identify their origin and how they affect daily life, which helps to know the limits of each activity.
  2. Autonomy : it allows us to have control over priorities and, in this way, to be independent in the decision-making process. Thanks to autonomy, an athlete is responsible for his own actions.
  3. Self-esteem : it is essential that criticisms, evaluations and perceptions of oneself are done in a positive way.
  4. Motivation : it helps us to keep ourselves in a good mood and to make sense of what we do, in order to carry out sports activities consistently and consistently. The result of this will be goal achievement, goal orientation and increased commitment.
  5. Self-management : consists of learning to control one’s emotions through analysis and accepting comments to improve oneself.

Types of leadership

According to Hernandez Mendo and Canto Ortiz, there are three types of leadership. The first, authoritarian, is that of a person who likes to give orders, is sometimes aggressive and wants to be in control without receiving help.

The second style, the democratic one, knows how to create balance within a group. The environment characterized by this type of leadership is positive and all members of the group love to work towards the same goal.

Finally, there is the laissez-faire leader – “forget it” – who is a person who doesn’t like being a leader. This type of individual does not care for the group, retains a passive anger and does not like to communicate.

Why is it important to know the types of leadership? When a person understands what type of leader they are dealing with, they can have a clearer vision of how to start managing their leadership. That is, if the individual can identify with a style, he can take it as an example to self-motivate and engage in desired activities.

First steps towards self-leadership

The first step towards acquiring self-leadership is to know yourself. This will allow us to discover the strong and the weak part of each of us and will help us to have the tools to face any situation that arises.

Subsequently, self-learning implies an attitude aimed at accepting mistakes and wanting to improve oneself. By knowing our weaknesses and strengths, we can seek guidance, help or a solution.

The third thing to do will be to set goals. Once you have outlined your needs, the next step is to determine where we want to go and, in this way, analyze the different tools and ways to achieve what is proposed. With this in mind, the plan to follow will be clearer.

Planning, a fundamental step

Once you’ve established all of the above, it’s time to plan. It consists of collecting ideas in lists, drawings and diagrams so that you always keep them in mind. In addition, it is important to plan everything chronologically, in order to keep motivation high every day.

When all plans have been put in place, it is essential to make adjustments based on the reality of each. This will generate flexibility to change and the action can be adapted at any time based on the evolution that has been achieved.

Self-leadership: the heart and mind of sport

When an athlete, whether professional or non-professional, understands the importance of self-leadership, they can manage it more easily and productively. The athlete must keep in mind that any decision they make will be based on the type of leader they consider or want to be.

Likewise, they must always keep in mind the needs and tools at their disposal, which can be adapted to the reality of each person to achieve their goals. Depending on the type of leadership, it will be possible to obtain good communication with the team and adequate professional support.
