All motorsport lovers love Formula 1 racing, with single-seaters spinning at incredible speeds and the best drivers in the world performing fantastic maneuvers on the track. When something gets out of their control, however, everyone’s hearts are paralyzed.

Formula 1 has been the scene, throughout its history, of impressive and lethal accidents, which continue to occur to this day. Below we present some of the most remembered incidents and we will also see what has changed to prevent these disasters.

The most tragic accidents in Formula 1

Tom Pryce in South Africa 1977

This accident is one of the most tragic in the history of Formula 1, as it not only ended the life of the racing driver, but also that of Race Commissioner Jansen Vuuren. All this, moreover, a few meters from the spectators and with the video cameras that filmed the final outcome.

It all began when Vuuren and another commissioner crossed the track to rescue the Italian driver Renzo Zorzi, whose vehicle was catching fire on the track, behind a hill that blocked the view to those who arrived.

At that moment Tom Pryce’s car hit Vuuren and caused the least anticipated ending. To make it even more serious, Pryce also died as a result of the impact with his head on the fire extinguisher that the commissioner was holding in his arms. Without doubt one of the darkest days of Formula 1.

Ayrton Senna in San Marino 1994, one of the most remembered Formula 1 accidents

This is probably the most iconic Formula 1 accident of all. Third time world champion Ayrton Senna lost his life in the famous Tamburello bend due to a frontal crash into the retaining wall.

This tragic event made Senna a legend of motoring; millions of fans around the world consider him the ultimate idol due to his bold and courageous driving style. The death of this Brazilian racing driver marked a before and after in the safety of Formula 1.

Niki Lauda in Germany, 1976

This accident almost cost the life of one of the best drivers of all time. Niki Lauda lost control of his car and crashed into a guardrail of the Nurburgring circuit; as a result, the vehicle, with the pilot still in the cabin, caught fire instantly.

The Austrian, world champion on three occasions (two after this episode) reported first and third degree burns on his face and arms, as well as lung damage from inhaling the gases from the fire. After fighting for his life for a few days, Lauda came out victorious and returned to drive his Ferrari only 40 days after the accident!

Fernando Alonso in Brazil, 2003

Surely many remember the Spaniard’s accident, which could have been much more serious. Mark Weber’s Jaguar had lost many parts on the track after an accident; although the security car had made its entrance, Alonso was unable to dodge the remains. This resulted in a very hard impact and when he got out of the car he was in pain, but luckily he did not suffer serious injuries.

This young French racing driver lost control of his vehicle due to the accumulation of water in turn 7 of the Japanese circuit. Unfortunately, it didn’t hit the wall, but a crane that was on the track to remove the remains of another vehicle.

Nine months later, on July 17, 2015, Bianchi lost his life in Nice, his hometown. More than twenty years had passed since the last death from a Formula 1 accident; the last had been that of Ayrton Senna.

Current safety measures to prevent accidents in Formula 1

Over the past two decades, safety experts have worked hard to avoid fatal outcomes from Formula 1 crashes. To this end, important steps have been taken to protect the well-being of racing drivers.

In addition to the significant technological advances that have occurred in recent times, which allow for better control of cars and reduce the risk of serious accidents, the Halo system was also introduced in 2018.

Similarly, the FIA ​​is evaluating the possibility of regulating the use of some sort of shield in the front of vehicles to protect drivers from possible objects that could collide directly with them. Some of them, however, including champion Sebastian Vettel, are against this measure.

Ultimately, it has been possible to reduce the incidence of Formula 1 crashes, yet it cannot be said that all will be avoided. At the moment, at least, the safety of car drivers is a priority and action is being taken.
