Tips not to forget for hiking

To practice hiking in the best possible way, it is important to follow some tips that will help you in case of little experience. Practicing hiking means enjoying the path without problems that can annoy us excessively.

Plan your route

It is one of the most important things, because it will help you decide if this is the best path for you and to know the difficulties you may find along the way.

For this reason, the best thing to do is to study the route well with a map or a map, to know the slope, the length, the duration …

Another important planning is the date and time of day on which the route will take place, as it is necessary to take into account the weather conditions and avoid the hot summer and night hours.

Go hiking in a group

If the trail has a river to cross, you need to take the season of the year  into consideration so that the water level is not too high.

It is always best to go accompanied, as in the event of an accident, no matter how insignificant it may be, it is better to have someone’s help. 3 people is a perfect number for hiking, as if one has an accident, another can stay with him while the third goes for help.

If you do not have the possibility for them to accompany you, always inform someone you trust that you are going hiking: if something happens to you and you cannot ask for help for any reason, that person will be able to inform and give your position.

Prepare the backpack for hiking

Think carefully about what you have to put in your backpack, which will depend on how long the journey will last. For journeys of a few hours, some of the useful things are:

  • Water: it depends on the heat and the effort required during the journey, but  an average of one and a half liters per adult  would be ideal.
Drink water
  • Food: it is not necessary to carry too much, because in addition to not having to carry a lot of weight, it is not advisable to overeat halfway through. A good option is to eat energy bars.
  • Mobile: in case of emergency, both to warn and to be locatable. Try to fully charge the battery before starting the ride. If the journey is relatively long, it is better to turn off the mobile phone to save battery.
  • Whistle: In case of a problem, the whistle makes us easier to locate and you will spend less energy than shouting.
  • Multi-purpose knife : to be legal where to have a single handle, a blade less than 11 cm and must not be automatic.
  • Flashlight: in case of unexpected darkness it is very useful. The most recommended for hiking is the front one, in order to have your hands free.
  • Sun protection: especially in summer,  but also at any time of the year and if it is a path at a certain height above sea level.

Keep in mind that the maximum recommended weight to carry to be comfortable is 4 – 6 kg. If we exceed this weight we could have problems finishing the course.

Bring first aid kit

It is very important that the kit is easily identifiable, so that it can be easily found in the event of an accident. We can use a plastic bag to put the basic kit things to prevent them from getting wet under some circumstances.

Appropriate clothing and footwear for hiking

For hiking, the characteristics of the shoes are:

  • Side protections, from toe to heel
  • Abrasion resistant outer material
  • Heel sole, of sufficient thickness and semi-rigid

When it comes to clothes,  the 3-layer rule is followed for the body:

For the first layer in winter we recommend a thermal T.shirt made of a synthetic fabric that facilitates transpiration and dries quickly. In summer, a loose t-shirt, also in synthetic fabric, is better.

The second layer consists of the jacket. In winter, usually a synthetic fleece fabric. Usually, a second layer with a zipper is more convenient because it allows us to adjust the ventilation of the body according to physical activity and weather conditions.

In summer, a light layer may be fine if we intend to go through shaded areas or areas of a certain height exposed to the wind.

The third layer in winter will usually be a waterproof jacket. In summer,  the third layer will be a windbreaker or raincoat that we will carry in the backpack in case of unexpected rain.

In conclusion, not only your legs are important for hiking, but other factors such as planning, backpack or clothing, can make the route much better.
